Public CCTV in Korea: How Many Cameras Does Each Region Have?

Updated 2 min readdevrives

TL;DR

  • Korea's national CCTV standard dataset lists 258,385 installation sites reporting 700,465 cameras (data downloaded 2026-09-20).
  • Gyeonggi (52,291 sites) and Seoul (42,253) lead, and crime prevention accounts for about two-thirds of all sites.
  • Registration and disclosure practices differ by municipality, so fewer cameras on the map does not mean fewer cameras in reality.

Using the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's national CCTV standard dataset (전국CCTV표준데이터) - the same data behind Viewcone (보는지도) - we aggregated camera counts by administrative region. The open data captures 258,385 installation sites reporting 700,465 cameras nationwide (data downloaded 2026-09-20).

1,184 sites (2,982 cameras) whose coordinates fall outside every province boundary are left out of the table.

At the county level, Suwon (4,803 sites), Jinju (3,925), and Gyeongsan (3,700) top the list. The full index is on the regions page (Korean).

By purpose

Crime prevention dominates with 173,659 sites - about two-thirds of the total. The rest: other purposes (34,753), child safety (17,997), traffic information (16,878), disaster safety (7,065), and facility protection (6,849).

Reading the numbers carefully

Cameras per site vary wildly by region. Jeju averages 5.3 cameras per site while Miryang in Gyeongnam averages 1.1. This mostly reflects different registration conventions - some municipalities register each camera as a site, others group multiple cameras on one pole.

Disclosure scope varies too. Hwaseong, for example, has only 21 sites in the dataset - municipalities running their own control systems may not register locations in the standard data. Fewer cameras on the map doesn't mean fewer cameras in reality. Cleaning the raw file surfaced the concrete data-quality issues behind these caveats - shared coordinates, dummy positions, and missing dates included.
